I Am Going To Texas Soon For Work, And I Have A Choice Of Two Cities….. Is Austin Texas Better Than Houston?
Posted by SusanNov 3
I am 23 and will be going to Texas, and so far, I have not made up my mind. I will either go to Houston, or Austin. I know that Houston has more job possibilities, but it is more humid. I hear Austin has a cool music scene going on over there, but I am not really sure if it is better than Houston. Please let me know, I would like to relocate to the best city.
Teebone, you need grammar lessons! I think Austin is better and I should know because I grew up in Houston and have lived in Austin for a long time. Austin just has a better vibe all around. Houston is too big and the traffic is horrendous! The freeways are always under construction and it takes too long to get anywhere! So, if that doesn’t deter you I don’t know what will. Austin is so much more fun for any age! I would go there for sure!
Houston has a much larger and more diverse job market. In addition, Houston has more jobs, period. There’s a reason why so many UT graduates leave Austin after they’re done. You can be a bookstore clerk in Austin or an accountant in Houston. Your call.
I vote for Austin. You’ll probably enjoy yourself more here. I’ve been to Houston a few times and even that was a drag. Commuting there sucks.
I’m 21 and have lived in Austin for almost 2 years. I really like it here, there is a lot to do and the traffic isn’t as bad!
You are young and just starting out, so Austin is definitely the place for you. Even if you were old, Austin is still the better choice.
Don’t get me wrong, I have had fun visiting Houston, but as the saying goes – “it is a fun place to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there.”
The culture, the nightlife, the vibe, the size, the outdoors, the cleanliness, the people, the restaurants, the history, the quirkiness, etc. – makes Austin all the more appealing.
Good luck on your move; I hope to see you in Austin sometime!
enjoy texas!…it has some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet!….
they are both great cities, it depends on what you like. austin has a wonderful nighlife and music scene. houston has the beach and a wonderful downtown area and arts district. houston probobly has more to do, but i wouldn’t put all of the weight on that alone. they both have relatively low crime rates. houstons had gone up with the hurricane katrina victims moving there but is seeing a recession in crime over the past 2 years. austin has always had one of the lowest crime rates in the country. try going to wikipedia.com and research both cities.
Austin has the best music scene in Texas, in my opinion, and it definitely has a better nightlife than Houston.
For job hunting, Houston would probably be your best choice. We always have the need for more medical workers and we also have many performing arts and oil business jobs to fill.
Houston has a huge amount of culinary arts workers and large computer/tech industries as well.
The downsides are the vastness of the city (not a walking, bikeriding kind of place), and of course the hard to predict weather.
Austin is a big city with a small town feel. Besides the music scene, there are government and teaching jobs to be had in the massive UT system and Texas Capitol complex. It’s also more scenic with the nearby hill country.
Depending on what kind of job you’re looking for, for someone your age I would recommend Austin over Houston, unless you’re looking to stay somewhere for longterm, then I’d say Houston.
Welcome to TEXAS!!
I live in Austin…. I have lots of friend in Houston.
I like visiting Houston, but my friends say that they like Austin better.. I agree.
Austin’s scene is much friendlier & cool..
Better schools too.
Well…. update & let us know what you think! And when you’ll officially become an Austin-nite!!
id said houston.
Austin is definitely a better place than Houston to live for most people, but especially for twenty somethings. Austin has tons of young people, it’s really laid back and has great nightlife whether you are into live music or not. It’s located in the Texas Hill Country, which means it’s prettier and has nicer weather (it still gets HOT though). There’s lots of outdoorsy stuff to do, great parks and people are very active, social and hip while at the same time not very pretentious. While it physically it looks like a small city, the vibe is pretty urban, especially nights and weekends.
Houston is sprawling and bland to me, with not a lot interesting going on downtown. Houston feels urban by day and dead nights and weekends. It has more of a bustle of business activity, but it’s nothing like NYC or Chicago. It has better cultural institutions, like big museums. It’s also more conservative.
Job-wise, it probably depends on what kind of job you are looking for whether Houston is better. I get the impression people work a little less and have more fun in Austin. If you are in a field where prestige of working at big city firm matters (like financial services), Austin probably won’t read as well as Houston on your resume even though it has branches of many major companies. There’s also an influx of people moving to Austin from NYC and California, which may mean increased job competition.
I think you can get a bit of sense of work culture differences by looking at companies based in each city.
Here’s a list of companies headquartered in Austin:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Co…

with all due love and respect Ma’am, i’m only saying that it’s simply a matter of simple choice between MUSIC…and SPORTS. I personally would go with the following:
LIVE with the MUSIC.
TRAVEL to the SPORTS.
